| The
art of Nancy Rankin is created from her involvement with nature. Gardening,
solitary walks along a garden path or through the woods or along the waters
edge all contribute to the artistic milieu from which she creates her works
on canvas and paper. Inanimate objects, rocks, shells or flowers are enjoyed
individually as an intricate part in their surroundings. Nancys impressionistic
paintings invite the viewer to join her walks of exploration and enjoy the
multitudinous gift of nature. Nancy was born Canyon, Arizona on a Navajo Indian reservation, later her family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas on the Gulf Coast. She attended the University of Texas School of Fine Art and subsequently earned a BFA from the University of Tennessee. During post-college years, Nancy married and began raising four children while currently doing additional art studies and traveling as an Air Force wife. She believes that continued study and accepting new challenges are essential for an artists growth. Annually for a few years, Nancy took a workshop itinerary with a group of other artists where she traveled coast-to-coast in the US, and also to Mexico, England and northern Europe. The annual painting trips were a great source of study and, personal growth and exploration. Interestingly, her favorite painting location is always the ocean. While living in Japan, Nancy studied the brush control techniques of the Sumie artists, which she has assimilated into her own watercolor style. She uses watercolor as both a transparent medium and in combination with acrylic or collage in an impressionistic experimental approach. Intricate detail is integrated with the spontaneous freedom of watercolor to present her personal interpretation of the surroundings. Nancy has exhibited her original paintings in galleries in Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Texas, Oregon, and Washington. Her works have been included in numerous regional and national exhibitions. Her original work is also retained in the Lawrence Gallery in Sheridan, Oregon and the Sand Dollar Gallery in Rockport, Texas. In collaboration with Steve Strickland of Genesis Fine Arts, Nancy completed her first limited edition serigraph entitled ;Forest Walk I & II; (diptych). Although, Nancy has lived primarily in the Southwest and Southeast, she feels that her recent move to the Northwest has been her;coming home! |
